The Project X Loading Zone steel shaft is getting a lot of tour play. Our tester with a 117 mph driver speed has made the Project X LZ 6.5 his gamer in his irons. Now the same brand name is on a 90 gram carbon fiber shaft for those of us with more modest swing speeds. I first noticed the shaft when my 2017 Mizuno fitting cart update arrived. This year’s 90g shaft from Mizuno is the Project X Tour LZ in a 5.0 and 6.0 flex.

What really got my attention was the FlexLoc torsional bands in the mid section of the shaft. These are the same bands used in the Project X LZ driver shafts. In the driver shaft, these band maintain stable torque and hoop strength through a section of the shaft with reduced wall thickness that created the soft midsection loading zone.

    Maybe I don’t understand the chart and you could please explain. You show the tip and butt torque of the 6.0 shaft to be greater than the 5.0 shaft and the 6.0 shaft a hair lighter. I always thought as the shaft got stiffer it was usually heavier and had less torque?

    • Ah, you see what I see. You understand the chart. What you see is the minor quality control issues common in carbon fiber manufacturing.

        Thank you for your reply. If I understand correctly then, this is not intentional and it would be possible to find 5.0 shafts that had more torque than 6.0 shafts simply due to inconsistencies from shaft to shaft.

    Wouldn’t that only be considered an inconsistency if other shafts of the same flex didn’t measure similarly. Just because the the lower flex is a gnat’s hair heavier and less torque doesn’t mean it’s an inconsistency, this could be them using different materials and layup etc. to try and achieve the same specs across flexes and if so, I’d say it’s a job very well done.

    • I agree with you, this is a job very well done and if that did not come across in the review I am sorry. The profile consistency seen in these is far above what I typically see in carbon fiber sets. There are constant weight shafts that do hold weight across the entire range of the set. There are parallels which do not. And there are some True Temper designs that occupy a middle ground, not exactly constant weight, but not changing as much as parallels made from blanks.
