TPT Nitro Driver Shaft Review

I have a long history with TPT. i visited their headquarters in 2018 when they first entered the golf shaft business. My first review of the TPT Driver shafts was published in 2018. There was a restructuring of management and I lost touch until earlier this year. The USA distributor is J&S Golf. Their re-emergence into the USA market comes with a tour win by Jason Day at the AT&T Byron Nelson in 2023 playing the Nitro 15 Lo in his driver. Club fitters interested in carrying TPT shafts can send an email to info@TPTgolfshaftsusa.com.

The TPT Nitro new driver shaft comes in two models, Hi and Lo and I measured all versions of both models.

TPT Red Fairway Shaft Review

The TPT Red Fairway is not a new shaft, it was introduced in 2020. I discussed TPT’s manufacturing process in the review of the TPT Red Driver shafts many years ago. This short review covers measurement of shafts sent to me by TPT engineering to be included in my database.

TPT, Thin Ply Technology, has its roots in America’s Cup yacht racing. They developed carbon fiber sails for America’s Cup yachts. They shaped carbon fiber into sails that maintained their shape. After successive America’s Cup wins, TPT moved their innovative carbon fiber processes to other industries, automotive, aerospace, aviation, snow sports and golf. They construct their own prepreg from the best fibers. Then form it into structures.

TPT makes their shafts out of carbon fiber ribbon cut from the prepreg sheets they make. The ribbon is wrapped around the shaft mandrel. The result is a seamless shaft with uniform stiffness in all orientations. That was verified in my measurement, Radial Quality, shown below. It is the best in the business.

Most shafts are hand wrapped resulting is shaft to shaft variance. TPT shafts are CNC wrapped around the shaft mandrel. This eliminates shaft to shaft variations. The shaft you are fit with is exactly the same as the shaft that will be installed in your driver.

TPT Golf Drive Shaft Review

TPT Golf is a division of a Swiss technology and composite firm that developed carbon fiber materials. They have produced America’s Cup yacht sails, lightweight racing car bodies, skis, snowboards, watch bodies, aircraft parts and satellite parts. They offered their prepreg to shaft companies and was told it was too expensive. Their only choice to enter the golf market was to make their own shafts. Their ultra premium shafts quickly appeared in the bags of several marque PGA players.

Thin Ply Technology (TPT) shafts have double the layers of material found in typical ultra premium shafts. Prepreg tapes are wrapped on the mandrel on CNC winders. Most other shafts are hand rolled, much like cigars. TPT makes the prepreg ribbon and can orientate the fiber direction in the ribbon. That creates a uniquely new method of creating golf shafts. They can adjust shaft properties in unique ways to adjust shaft performance. I have been to the Swiss R&D site demonstrating the process of EI measurement with my instrument and software.

This video was shot on the closing afternoon of the 2018 PGA Merchandise Show. Jeff Meyer, one of the top shaft designers in the business explains some of the TPT technology.

Let’s take a look at the Low Kick Point and Mid Kick Point profiles.
