The Airburst Burgundy is the second shaft made by Olympic for Oban. Olympic is a premium Japanese fishing rod company. They specialize is fishing rods which are much like golf shafts, hollow carbon fiber tubes. The Olympic website has an in-depth discussion of carbon fiber properties of tubes. If you have never seen the manufacturing of a graphite golf shaft I recommend you watch this video about fishing rod construction. From 0:56 to 5:30 you are watching the process of the making of a graphite golf shaft. Graphite shafts are with few exceptions hand rolled. No one in the golf shaft business will publish a video about the manufacturing process they use. This is how it is done:

Ralph Reichert, owner of Oban Golf shafts discusses the making and technology of the Airburst golf shafts in this video from my my YouTube Channel, Devoted Golfer, We shot this discussion at the January 2019 PGA show.

Lets take a look at the second Airburst golf shaft from Oban.

VA Composites was created in 2017 by Victor Afable. Victor has been in the golf business over 35 years. Much of it with golf shaft companies. He is now the owner of VA Composites and responsible for the design of VA Composite shafts. His past designs have over 100 tour wins including a major.

The VA Composite Vylyn (Villain) is a mid price shaft designated as Mid-High Launch. It is offered in weights ranging from 48g to 66g. The Tip/Butt stiffness is higher than what we saw in the Slay, validating the launch propensity stated by VA Composites. Lets take a look at the data.

ACCRA TZ5 and TZ6 Driver Shaft Review

ACCRA shafts are sold exclusively to custom club fitters and builders. The TZ models are an evolution of the Tour Z series. The TZ5 and TZ6 incorporate the latest high modulus materials. High modulus materials have a muted feel. Solid strikes deliver a lower frequency thud to your hands in contrast to the higher frequency click typical of lower density pre-preg.

Fujikura Ventus Driver Golf Shaft Review

Fujikura Ventus Driver Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Golf Center at the Highlands, Carrollton Texas
Golf Digest Certified America’s 100 Best Clubfitters

Fujikura tells us the Ventus driver shaft is made with full length Pitch 70 Ton Carbon Fiber material that is 150% stronger than Toray T1100g. T1100g is used in many premium driver shafts. In the Ventus, the 70 ton full length fiber is combined with 40 Ton Carbon Fiber to minimizes twisting. We here from them that high torque creates dispersion. The design of the Ventus is low tip torque to decrease dispersion. Years of fitting experience validate this torque observation. The stock shafts in most drivers have higher torque than the shaft upgrades offered by both the club companies and aftermarket fitters.

We know that very low torque shafts feel boardy. That can be mitigated by having a low torque tip combined with a higher torque mid and but. The tip resists twist at impact while the higher torque in the mid and butt restore feel.
